THE AMBULANCE CHASER

MURDER. JUSTICE. REDEMPTION.

THE FUGITIVE meets THE LINCOLN LAWYER in a star-driven Atlanta-to-Las Vegas legal-crime thriller based on Brian Cuban’s award-winning novel.

Lou Diamond Phillips, Vice President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a Governor of its Actors Branch, is attached to direct and to appear in a supporting role in The Ambulance Chaser, a feature film based on Brian Cuban’s award-winning crime-thriller novel.

Produced by Atlanta-based Autumn Bailey-Ford and developed by NDoor Productions, The Ambulance Chaser centers on Jason Fredricks, a charismatic and highly effective Atlanta personal-injury lawyer whose professional success masks addiction, strained relationships, and a secret he has carried since his freshman year of college.

Decades after University of Georgia freshman Heather Brody disappeared during Thanksgiving break, human remains are found in Atlanta. Physical evidence links Jason to Heather and to the night she vanished. Jason did not kill her—but he has concealed what he knows for decades. As investigators close in and those who buried the truth try to protect themselves, Jason’s career, freedom, family, and life begin to collapse.

Jason’s former wife, Sonya Fredricks, is the elected Fulton County District Attorney and the mother of their 20-year-old son, Sam. When Jason becomes implicated in Heather’s death, Sonya’s office must recuse itself from the prosecution. She nevertheless remains at the emotional center of the crisis as Jason’s past threatens their son and forces both former spouses to confront the consequences of Jason’s choices.

The mystery ultimately drives Jason beyond Atlanta. With help from Zev, a former covert operative with an extraordinary network of contacts, Jason searches for a man who disappeared decades earlier and may hold the key to what really happened to Heather. The trail leads through a former Air Force intelligence officer, Nellis Air Force Base, and the music world of Las Vegas.

Music is central to the story. A gifted Juilliard pianist, a damaged hand, and a distinctive interpretation of Chopin become part of the mystery—connecting friendship, memory, and loss across decades and ultimately helping Jason recognize the witness he desperately needs to find.

The stakes become intensely personal when the men determined to keep Heather’s death buried kidnap Sam and use him as leverage against Jason. What began as a decades-old secret becomes a race to save his son, uncover the truth, and survive long enough to expose it.

Rooted in Atlanta—from Grady Hospital and Morehouse College to the Fulton County legal world, Little Five Points, and the city’s music culture—the story expands into a visually distinctive third act in Las Vegas, driven by investigation, music, sports, pursuit, and family stakes.

The Ambulance Chaser is being developed as the first chapter of a continuing legal-crime thriller franchise. Brian Cuban’s published sequel, The Body Brokers, provides source material for another story, while the continuing Jason Fredricks, Stacy Peterson, and Zev characters create an engine capable of extending the franchise beyond a single sequel.

“This film combines the intelligence and authenticity of a Grisham legal thriller, a backstory worthy of Stephen King, and the momentum of ‘No Way Out. As a Director, I’m especially excited about the opportunities for production design, cinematography, and music. With cinematic touchstones as diverse as Fincher and Hitchcock, ‘The Ambulance Chaser’ promises to be a polished and mainstream feature that showcases the many facets of its Atlanta location. I could not be more excited to enlist the talents of cinematographer Alan Caudillo and legendary production designer Wynn Thomas for ‘The Ambulance Chaser.’ In addition to their prodigious talent and experience, both are such intuitive and innovative artists who bring cultural and cutting-edge sensibilities to their work. Their level of taste and expertise will certainly elevate an already exciting project.”

“I am elated to reunite with Lou Diamond Phillips on ‘The Ambulance Chaser.’ Lou is not only a gifted performer and thoughtful director, but also a true visual artist and an ideal partner for a director of photography. I’m equally thrilled to collaborate with Wynn Thomas, a legendary production designer whose work has shaped many of my favorite films. Paired with a taut, impeccably written script, this feels like the perfect formula for a gripping motion picture.”

"When I first read 'The Ambulance Chaser,' I instantly recognized that it had to be a film. It reminded me of so many high-action thrillers that I grew up watching. I am excited to bring this project to life. 'The Ambulance Chaser' is going to take you on a wild, fun ride."

“When I wrote ‘The Ambulance Chaser,’ I wanted a story as raw and real as the struggles I’ve lived,” Cuban said. “Seeing it come to life on screen—with Lou Diamond Phillips’ vision as director, Autumn Bailey-Ford’s producing power, and Atlanta as a central character—is a dream come true. Audiences will feel the intensity and humanity of this story, told with honesty and heart.”

“We’ve been close friends, collaborators, and Metro Atlanta residents for decades,” said the partners at NDoor Productions. “Each of us brings a distinct skill set, and together we are building stories that matter. The Ambulance Chaser is a story about justice, loyalty, guilt, family, and redemption—about a deeply flawed man forced to confront the consequences of choices he made decades earlier. Atlanta remains central to the film’s identity, while the story’s expansion into Las Vegas gives the movie greater visual scale and commercial reach. We believe the characters and world created here can sustain stories well beyond the first film.”
